Acupuncture for Yoga Practitioners and Athletes
With a strong background in both yoga and dance I understand the frustration that can come from feeling stuck or unable to move with the ease and grace you know your body is capable of expressing.
Anatomy and movement are topics I have studied for 20+ years, both personally and professionally. I have found that overuse, poor posture or various physical conditions such as leg length differences can lead to structural imbalances that impede our daily activities as well as our yoga/athletic practices. These structural imbalances can lead to constriction and injuries that donšt seem to heal completely.
With a strong emphasis on palpation examination, I locate muscle restrictions and holding patterns and release them using acupuncture. The styles of acupuncture I practice to relief these constrictions are trigger point release and motor point release.
With trigger point and motor point release work, the needle will create a sensation that feels like a quick spasm or a jump of a muscle and the surrounding connective tissue. The sensations commonly travel to the surrounding areas. The immediate effects can feel like lingering post-workout soreness that fades over a 48 hour period. The benefits of this style are very long lasting. This style is particularly effective for the treatment of
whiplash, sciatica, rotator cuff injuries, recovery from falls and accidents that resulted in muscle spasms, athletic and dance injuries to name a few.
These are decidedly Western based approaches so I combine them with TCM or Japanese acupuncture to round out the balance of the whole-body recovery to injury, trauma and stress. This combination lends itself quite naturally to treating structural imbalances that constrict motion.
